Billy Joel Defends NYC Tourism Rep Taylor Swift: 'You Snoots. Let Her In'

It must be hard out there for those few stalwarts who haven’t joined the cult of Taylor Swift. The woman is everywhere. Dominating the charts, coveringmagazines, and even cropping up in random family photos. While it’s probably O.K. if you don’t love Taylor Swift, it’s not O.K. for you to hate (hate hate hate hate) her. Not because it bothers Swift, she’s already shaken it off. But because it bothers Billy Joel. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to upset the Piano Man.

Joel hopped to the singer’s defense after she received backlash for being named“Global Welcome Ambassador” for New York City’s tourism board. Joel toldUSA Today:

I see the New York press going, “Taylor Swift is going to be the new New York representative?” You snoots. Let her in. That’s what New York is all about. I say, “Welcome.”

I think she’s a talented songwriter. She catches a lot of junk, maybe because she’s so popular with young girls. But I like what she’s projecting. I respect what she’s doing.

First of all, let’s all agree to use the word “snoots” more often. Secondly, Joel, a native of Long Island, wrote one of the most iconic New York songs of all time. So he knows whereof he speaks. Sure, she may not have been born in New York, but Swift has been hitting up a bunch of Knicks games, donating money to New York public schools, and generally making the most of her adopted new home. What have you done for New York lately, you snoots?
