Chris Martin: David Bowie Rejected Coldplay Collaboration

Chris Martin has revealed during an awards ceremony that David Bowie once rejected the opportunity to collaborate with Coldplaybecause the song they sent him wasn’t good enough.

Speaking as part of a video montage at the inaugural BBC Music Awards where Bowie was nominated for British Artist Of The Year, Martin discussed the time he tried to get Bowie to record vocals for a song he had written.

“One time I sent him a song to ask him to sing on it. He called me and said, ‘It’s not one of your best.’ He’s got very high standards and I appreciate that. It inspires the rest of us to keep our standards high,” said the Coldplay frontman.

Martin also praised Bowie’s illustrious career and his admirable longevity in the industry, including the first single from Bowie’s 24th studio album, The Next Day. “When Where Are We Now? came out I was staggered, and also annoyed,” he said. “Like, ‘Come on, it’s not fair.’ He’s already got all these amazing songs and then this instant classic.”

Bowie lost out to Ed Sheeran in the British artist of the year category. Other big winners of the inaugural event include Pharrell Williams who was named International Artist of the Year and whose song Happy claimed the award for Song Of The Year. Welsh rockers Catfish and the Bottlemen won the BBC Introducing award for best new act.

This week Coldplay shared new song, Miracles, their first new piece of material since the release of their latest album Ghost Stories. The song will feature on the forthcoming soundtrack for the Angelina Jolie-directed film Unbroken. Martin has also recently confirmed the band are already working on the Ghost Stories follow-up album, titled A Head Full of Dreams, hinting that it may be their last.
